New document is designed to set out best practice for designers, installers and users of vapour compression refrigerating systems when handling A1 refrigerant.
The Institute of Refrigeration (IOR) has updated its Safety Code of Practice for Non-Flammable, Lower Toxicity Refrigerants to set out the latest industry thinking on handling of such gases.
According to the IOR, the updated publication is designed for designers, installers and users of vapour compression refrigerating systems that use A1 refrigerant. This will apply to HFC and HFC blends.
The new code has been prepared by the organisation’s technical committee to ensure compliance with safety standards such as BS EN378:2016 that applies to refrigerating systems and heat pumps, as well as F-Gas requirements. It is now available from the IOR website and can also be purchased by non-members as a PDF download.
Properties of different refrigerants, testing and maintenance and best practice for decommissioning of systems are among the key topics of the guidance.
The guidance also touches upon planning for inspection and maintenance schedules, system register details and other key definitions, along with setting out a list of relevant standards, the IOR added.
Three other safety codes of practice focused on specific types of refrigerant are currently being reviewed. The revised additions are scheduled for release next month and will focus on the following refrigerant:
- Carbon Dioxide R744
- Ammonia R717
- Flammable Lower Toxicity Refrigerants grouped as A2L, A2 and A3 gas
