PAT Testing Course City & Guilds 2377-77 | 3 days

Who is this PAT Testing course aimed at?

This PAT testing training course is aimed at beginners who have little or no electrical knowledge or experience and are hoping to enter the electrical industry. This course is ideal for those who are responsible for the maintenance of electrical equipment and those undertaking practical Inspection and Testing of electrical equipment. PAT testing (portable appliance testing), also known as in-service Inspection and Testing of electrical equipment, provides additional revenue for many electricians – completing a course also allows facilities and office managers to conduct PAT testing in house. Whilst PAT testing is not a legal requirement, the law states that employers must ensure portable electrics are maintained to prevent any dangers, the HSE recommends PAT Testing to maintain equipment which can be found in the Electricity at Work Regulations.

If you have experience and basic electrical knowledge, our two-day PAT testing course will be the best option for you.

What does this PAT course cover?

This PAT testing course will increase candidates’ understanding of how electrics work and how it is installed. It will teach them how to test portable electrical items, providing learners with the ability to carry out any mandatory checks. PAT Testing training also allows them to learn, develop and practice the skills required to Inspection and Testing electrical items, ensuring they follow the latest IET code of practice of practice for in-service inspection and testing, covering PAT Testing requirements and regulations.

This three-day portable appliance course covers the same content as the two-day course, but with an additional day to provide more information and knowledge regarding the technical aspects of PAT testing.

Day one will provide a foundation of knowledge covering:

  • What is electricity?
  • Simple ohm’s law
  • Units of measurements used when working with electricity
  • The effects of electric shock and how it occurs
  • Simple power calculations
  • How to protect from over current (fuses and circuit breakers)
  • Earthing for protection
  • The operation and uses of RCD protection
  • Terms used in PAT testing
  • PAT Testing requirements and regulations
  • Disconnection times and how conductor resistance affects them

The course covers both theory and theory based & practical based training.

Day two covers the theory of in-service Inspection and testing, referencing the IET code of practice

Day three is more practical, allowing candidates to practice with equipment. The assessment will also be completed on this day.

This course will specifically cover:

  • How to follow the IET code of practice (COP)
  • Definitions used with the COP
  • PAT Testing regulations
  • Legal responsibilities and requirements
  • Which equipment is and isn’t covered in the COP
  • Competence and training
  • Any relevant electrical units of measurements
  • Classes of equipment, construction of equipment and safety methods
  • User checks
  • Visual inspection
  • What test instruments do and how
  • How to carry out Inspection and Testing
  • The frequency of in-service Inspection and Testing
  • Record keeping and reporting
  • Risk assessment examples

What PAT testing qualifications will be received?

Upon successful completion of this course, candidates will receive a City & Guilds 2377-77 PAT testing qualification.

To gain this qualification, candidates must successfully pass a short practical assessment, completing the following tasks:

Task 1 – Inspect and test class I equipment,
Task 2 – Inspect and test class II equipment (this will be either unearthed metal or without unearthed metal of class II FE – learners will not need to do all three of these, they only need to do one type.)
Task 3 – Complete record forms.

Candidates must also pass a 1hr 45-minute exam, made up of fifty questions.

We have a wide range of PAT Testers which are the equipment used for carrying out PAT Testing plus a wide range of equipment to show real world examples of the different classes of equipment.

Course Reviews

A good course and training provider. I would highly recommend to others. Thank you for your support.

The classroom was cold and they kept turning the heating off. Leslie was the best instructor I've had at Technique, very knowledgeable and great at breaking things down and explaining them to me. PAT testers are old and dated.
