Online Electrified Heat

Electrified Heat

Who should learn?

This course is suitable for those engaged in the planning, development, design, construction, operation of buildings or their refurbishment.

Course Overview

The UK has set an ambitious 2050 Net Zero Carbon target. A fundamental part of the Net Zero Carbon strategy is to change from gas heating systems to cleaner electrified heat. This course aims to equip those involved in forming energy strategies, planning developments, new building projects, refurbishment projects on how electrified heat can be correctly applied. Whilst a major focus of the course is on heat pumps the course also considers other options for electrified heating and what the components are for all these heating system options. The course also details building fabric considerations, electrical system requirements and addresses the issue of using electrified heat to generate hot water for domestic purposes.

Learning Objectives

Through this online course, you will learn:

  • Identify with the drivers for electrified heat.
  • Understand options and limitations for electrified heat.
  • Appreciate heating system fabric considerations and the components of an electrified heating system.
  • Understand the applications of electrified heat in new buildings and for refurbishment projects.

This unit provides an overall introduction to electrified heat. This will include UK government drivers, policies and mechanisms to accelerate the adoption of electrified heat. The key stakeholders in the electrified heat market will be considered and finally a general overview of the applications for electrified heat will be provided.

By the end of this unit, you will:

  • Have received a general introduction to electrified heat and understand some of the key terminology used.
  • Appreciate the drivers for electrified heat to understand its importance.
  • Understand the key stakeholders in the electrified heat market.
  • Understand the applications for electrified heat.

This unit provides an overview of the impact that building orientation, building fabric and air leakage have upon heat losses and heating system sizing. This unit also considers building occupants’ thermal comfort perceptions and realities.

By the end of this unit, you will:

  • Understand the impact that building orientation and solar gains can have upon a building and its heating system.
  • Understand the impact that building fabric, insulation levels and air leakage have upon buildings and their heating systems.
  • Understand the thermal comfort of building occupants and how they relate to heating systems.
  • Understand how to carry out heat loss calculations that can be used to select appropriately sized heat pumps.

This unit considers the impacts and requirements upon the electrical supply for electrified heating. Topics such as future demands, available grid capacity, generation types and smart grids are considered. Demand management techniques for electrified heat are also explored. We will also discuss how PV and electric vehicle charging can have an impact upon electrified heating.

By the end of this unit, you will:

  • Understand how larger electrical supplies to buildings are needed when electrified heat is installed.
  • Understand the role of smart grids and what impact they have on electrified heat.
  • Understand how demand management and flexibility apply to electrified heat.
  • Understand the impact of photovoltaics and electric vehicle charging on electrified heat.

This unit explores the various options that exist for providing space heating and domestic hot water in buildings. This unit will discuss selection and design considerations for direct electric heating and heat pumps and will outline low carbon non-electric heating alternatives.

By the end of this unit, you will:

  • Understand selection and design considerations when considering a new electrified heating system.
  • Understand the various types of direct electric heating systems that are available.
  • Understand the different types of heat pumps that are available.
  • Understand low carbon alternatives to electrified heat.

This unit explores heat pumps that are used to provide heating and hot water within buildings. We will look at how heat pumps work and heat pump theory. We will also review the principal operating factors, efficiency ratings and practicalities associated with heat pumps.

By the end of this unit, you will:

  • Understand how heat pumps work.
  • Understand heat pump key operating factors.
  • Understand how heat pumps and efficiency ratings are classified.
  • Understand the practicalities of installing a heat pump.

This unit considers the wider heating system and key components in electrified heating systems, including direct electric, refrigerant heat pumps, wet heat pumps and associated controls systems.

By the end of this unit, you will:

  • Understand direct electric heating systems, such as direct electric boilers and direct electric heaters.
  • Understand Direct Expansion (DX) and Variable Refrigerant Volume (VRV) heat pump systems.
  • Understand wet heat pump systems.
  • Understand the requirements of heating controls systems.

In this unit, we will explore the issue of how domestic hot water is produced using electricity. Consideration is given to the different methods of heating water, such as direct electric heating, heat pumps, renewables and waste heat.

By the end of this unit, you will:

  • Understand direct electric hot water heating methods to generate domestic hot water.
  • Understand heat pump methods to generate domestic hot water, including cascade and high temperature heat pumps.
  • Understand renewable energy methods to generate domestic hot water.
  • Understand heat recovery methods to generate domestic hot water from waste heat.

In this unit, all of the previous learning will be consolidated and examples of selecting electrified heating systems will be provided. We will explore system selection, installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance. This unit will also consider refurbishment, new domestic and commercial buildings.

By the end of this unit, you will:

  • Understand electrified heating system requirements in refurbishment projects.
  • Understand the selection of electrified heating installations in domestic projects.
  • Understand the selection of electrified heating installations in non-domestic projects.
  • Understand the requirements for the operation and maintenance of electrified heating systems.

This unit will showcase electrified heat case studies to provide real-life examples of how electric heating has been put into practice. The case studies presented cover a wide range of building types and include related sustainability features to provide a comprehensive overview of the projects.

By the end of this unit, you will have reviewed:

  • A case study for an electrified heating solution in a new commercial office building.
  • A case study for an electrified heating solution in a heat recovery application.
  • A case study for an electrified heating solution in a commercial retrofit application.
